What's that smell?

Every now and then I get a whiff of something floating past my ski-jump nose and wonder, what was that?

Sometimes it's like perfume or cologne. Sometimes it's something appealing like bacon frying (and it really appeals because I don't eat bacon anymore and I miss it), sometimes it's something icky-nasty.

I have a somewhat sensitive sniffer so I have to wonder if this is a scent that has wafted in from the neighbor's or something carried on the wind from a few places down?

I have no way of knowing from whence the aroma has been cast but this has been happening more lately so it's come to the front of the mind.

What does it mean do you think?

In times past I would get the smell of french toast early in the morning while I am sipping coffee in my rocking chair. I enjoy that when it happens.

I also have pretty good hearing and during that morning ritual while rocking in my chair and sipping my coffee I would often hear revile play. I took that in stride and as I realized it played at the same time every morning I thought of it as my own personal alarm clock. It turned out though, that it was coming from a national guard air base not far from my city.

In spite of my age my hearing and my sense of smell has not decreased.

But there is mystery surrounding these airy scents. There are times when these ethereal smells occur when it seems quite unlikely. How is it that I am smelling pine trees in my kitchen with all the doors and windows closed?
