In this month's Readers Digest there is an article that states the healthiest diet for your heart health is the Mediterranean diet and the worst diet for your heart health is the Keto diet. I already knew this but it felt good to see it confirmed in a well read popular magazine. I've tried to spread the word about Keto (and diets like it) on Facebook and on Twitter but people actually lose weight on a Keto diet so it's hard to convince them that they are killing themselves, losing muscle not fat, and causing damage that will not be repaired even after stopping the diet. The whole reason this article appeared I'm sure, is because heart disease is the number one killer of people in the USA, especially women. So, what's wrong with the Keto diet you might be asking?
Saturated fat. ie: animal fat. Trans fats. Trans fats are unsaturated fatty acids made when liquid oils are turned into solid fats like shortening or margarine. Too much trans fat in your diet increases your risk for heart disease and other health problems, so artificial trans fats are highly regulated or banned in many nations. And Tropical fats. ie: coconut oil, palm oil, etc. For reasons I cannot figure out coconut oil is hugely popular right now. It's a fad I know, but it has gained popularity increasingly and is really not good for you.
