When you hit that 'I am old enough' age.....

When you graduate high school, you might be thinking to yourself, now I can move into my own place and start 'adulting'. Maybe you have waited until you have graduated college. Maybe you just feel like you are ready to 'get out there' on your own. Here's a checklist for you to use to determine if you are really ready for that.

Moving Out Readiness Checklist (Ages 18–19 +)

Financial Readiness

Do I have a steady, reliable source of income?

Can I cover rent + utilities + food + transportation + phone + insurance every month?

Do I have at least 2–3 months of emergency savings?

Do I understand how to create and stick to a budget?

Do I know my credit score (or how to build credit if I don’t have one)? (earlier post covered this topic)

Can I afford move-in costs (deposit, first month’s rent, furniture, supplies)?

Am I prepared for unexpected expenses (car repair, medical bill, job loss)?

Personal Responsibility & Life Skills

Can I cook basic meals for myself regularly?

Do I know how to grocery shop and avoid overspending?

Can I clean and maintain a living space consistently?

Do I do my own laundry without help?

Can I manage my time without someone reminding me?

Do I wake up, get to work/school, and handle responsibilities on my own?

Housing & Logistics

Do I understand how leases work before signing one?

Can I afford rent on my own (not just relying on roommates)?

Have I researched safe neighborhoods and commute times?

Do I understand renter responsibilities (damage, noise, rules)?

Do I have a backup plan if a roommate moves out or stops paying?

Legal & Adult Responsibilities

Do I understand basic contracts and what I’m agreeing to?

Do I know how to set up utilities (electric, water, internet)?

Do I understand my rights as a tenant?

Do I have health insurance and know how to use it?

Do I know how to handle bills, due dates, and late fees?

Transportation

Do I have reliable transportation (car, bus, bike, etc.)?

Can I afford gas, maintenance, or transit costs?

Do I have a backup plan if transportation fails?

Food & Daily Living

Can I plan meals for a full week?

Do I understand how much groceries realistically cost?

Am I prepared to eat at home more instead of eating out?

Emotional & Mental Readiness

Am I comfortable being alone regularly?

Can I handle stress without relying on parents daily?

Do I have a support system (friends, family, mentors)?

Am I moving out for healthy reasons (growth, independence) — not just to escape conflict?

Safety & Support

Do I know who to call in an emergency?

Do I have basic first aid knowledge?

Can I handle situations like illness, accidents, or emergencies alone?

Do I have important documents (ID, Social Security card, birth certificate)?

Long-Term Thinking

Will moving out support my future goals (school, career, savings)?

Am I prepared to sacrifice some comforts to afford independence?

Do I have a plan if things don’t work out?

Reality Check Questions (Be Honest)

Am I underestimating how expensive life is?

Am I depending too much on others financially?

Would staying home longer help me save money or build stability?

Am I ready for less freedom in some ways (more bills, more responsibility)?

Final Self-Check

If you can confidently say:

“I can support myself financially”

“I can manage my daily life without help”

“I have a safety net and a backup plan”

Then you’re likely ready—or very close.

How did you do?

Why did the student eat his homework?

The teacher said it was a piece of cake.
